Why Nokia E65? - VOIP!

In Australia, most mobile plans are cap plans so this might not be as attractive a feature as it is in other countries. VOIP allows your mobile phone to connect to your VOIP or SKYPE account and call locally and internationally at a fraction of the price that you pay on your mobile plan.

The other day I was in a suburban shopping centre and noticed that there was a WiFi network about. I tried surfing the net and it worked! Then an idea came into my head... do you think I can call someone using my VOIP account even though I am not at home? I loaded up Fring and my MSN contacts loaded up. Cool! MSN in the shopping centre! Anyway, back to the VOIP.

I scrolled down and tried calling my sister, the program asked if I wanted to make an Internet or a Cellular call... Internet! A few seconds later, I heard it ringing! Later she asked me, "how come you were calling on from a land line?" *grin* It worked. The call cost me 15c under iiNET's VOIP plan.

Why Nokia E65? Personalisation on Standby

Sometimes it is the smallest things that make a difference. Nokia phones are more often using a STANDBY mode which conserves battery life. You can customize what the phone will display in this standby mode. It will show the time regardless of what option you choose as well as the missed calls or messages that you have received. But one cool thing you can do is customise the display to show whatever test you want, rather than display the date. Its nice to see your phone declaring its allegiance to you when it says "John's phone" while on standby. Sure this may not be a huge factor.. But its nice.

Why Nokia E65 - WiFi

WiFi
The world has changed. You can almost go anywhere and there will be a wireless network beckoning you to connect to the internet... often free of charge (except Australia McDonalds - stingy buggers signed up with Telstra to charge for wifi). THe phone surfs the net very well, the cursor intuitively hovers over each link as you scroll down in case you want to click through to another page. The phone has no problem finding WIFI networks either. The only problem is when networks require a PRIVATE VPN installed.

With a WIFI connection you can connect your phone through Fring to MSN Messenger or just use the Web MSN messenger.

You can also connect to your VOIP account, which leads to an interesting situation
* you can call your friends on a local number and talk at a cheaper rate (10c flat rate to any capital city in Australia if you are with iiNET).
* you can receive VOIP calls through your mobile phone when you are at home
* you can call other mobiles at a cheaper rate than your mobile provider.

E65

How good is the E65? I've decided to get it. Was deciding between N95 and E65 but E65 was clearly a nicer phone, lighter and has everything except the GPS N95 has.
