Nokia E65 tip - Avoid hanging up while sliding down

Previously I mentioned in Watch that slide that one problem with slide phones is that you can't slide it down during the call. Thanks to Roobin for clearing that up. You can in fact slide the phone down during a call by pressing the top left selection key (has OPTIONS above it) then slide the phone down. The phone will not hang up, it will only ask if you would like to lock the phone.

Addicted to Facebook? Check it on your Nokia E65

Facebook can be accessed with your E65 by going to m.facebook.com One cool feature this allows is that it will automatically remember you every time you login, just like you can remember the password on the computer. You cant run your applications or anything too complicated but its an interesting use of your mobile internet. Of course, once again, this feature is best used when accessing free WIFI so you dont pay through your ears for data charges.

Accessories for Nokia E65 you would recommend

External speakers dock, remote control headphones and FM transmitters are some gadgets iPod users look when they want to get more out of their mp3 player. What Nokia E65 accessories have you purchased or wish you could have?

One thing is an extra battery. With so many features for the Nokia E65, you can soon find yourself with a flat battery. In the same line of thought, a car charger is very handy.

The E65 also has the capability of being hooked up to a bluetooth GPS dongle so that the E65 can be used as a GPS.

Google Calendar FREE SMS reminders of events

I am not sure if I have posted this before but not many people realise a feature of google calendar. For every event that you put into Google Calendar, there is an option for you to receive an SMS reminder from GOOGLE of the event. Go to http://calendar.google.com/ and under options/settings set up SMS alerts. Google will send you a confirmation sms to verify that the number you entered is actually yours. once that is done, you can automatically select SMS reminder for each event. This feature will only cost you if your phone plan charges for receiving SMS. For Australian users, no carriers charge for receiving sms. Don't believe me? Follow this link to read it from Google. Sure, you could just set an alarm reminder in your phone but what's the fun in that? I am currently looking into various programs to sync google calendar with the nokia phone calendar. If this is something you have mastered already, leave a comment and enlighten us all.

FREE WIFI in Sydney Public Libraries

The full article can be read here

February 18, 2008: Sydney Lord Mayor, Clover Moore has announced the trial of free wireless internet access in local libraries to test the feasibility of a larger scale roll-out.

The City of Sydney libraries in Glebe, Customs House, Newtown, Ultimo and Haymarket are all up and running with free wireless internet access in a trial designed to test the waters of a European-style implementation on Australian shores.

See the new hotspots and all the other FREE wifi Hotspots in Sydney (and around Australia) as discussed in this post which can be used with your Nokia E65. Useful to check your Gmail while waiting for your ferry to Manly, see the Sydney weather radar before buying a ticket to the Sydney Zoo, or just do a price check on a gadget you are eyeing in the mall.

Why Nokia E65? MP3 Alarms and Ringtones

One feature people hardly use is making their mp3 music or recordings their ringtones and alarms. For any sound file, you can open the file in Nokia's music player and then under OPTIONS select ""Set As Ringing Tone". You might want to set a certain song as a reminder for you to do something. Or you could set your own voice recording of yourself telling you to wake up or take out the trash. This is a novel alternative to setting calendar reminders but could be awkward if you forget to change your alarm back to something more generic the next time you use it in a public place.

Nokia E65 Dictionary Hack FINALLY found

Predictive texting is a great feature.. until you inadvertantly add a word like uif in the dictionary. Now, every time you want to type "the" by pressing 843, you get "uif" instead. In an earlier post, there didn't seem to be a fix for this. I am not sure whether it was because I upgraded my firmware but a suggestion made by someone else now works.

If you want the dictionary to predict a certain word, press * until the OPTION menu becomes SPELL.

Select SPELL and add "the" for example, back into the dictionary. now every time you type 843 with the predictive text, it will give you "the" as the first option when you press 843 instead of "uif" or whatever other word you

How to fix youtube videos not showing on Nokia mobiles

Just solved a problem I had for a while. Realplayer never seemed to work properly, saying no connection could be made to the videos off m.youtube.com I checked the "CONNECTIONS" settings in RealPlayer (which I completely forgot even existed) and realised that for some reason there was a PROXY set up, i selected NO to the proxy and tried the videos again and now Mobile YouTube works!

However, the YouTube application still refuses to work. I don't really intend to watch much on my phone but it's just one of those things... its good to know that you can.

Top 5 Applications for Nokia E65 Phones

IMHO these are the top 5 free applications you can download for your Nokia E65, E61, N95 or any Symbian phone.

1. Google Maps - With a good data plan, you can know where you are in the world, how to get to your next destination, how far and how long that will take, what shops are nearby, where "New York" is in the US, what the top of your house looks like and all without the use of GPS!! (Now I know i made the right decision not to go with the N95). Read more here about Google Maps.

2. Gmail - Within 20 seconds, you can know what emails are waiting in your gmail (or in any POP3 account registered with your GMAIL account, see this link for more details). You can search for someone's address when they emailled it to you, check the time for an event, draft an email to someone (bluetooth keyboard wouldbe good for this), or just alleviate your boredom waiting for a bus, a friend, a meal to be served or just to overcome an awkward situation :) Read more here about Gmail

3. KJV Go Bible - Let's face it, with the Bible available online, on TV, at every hotel, school and prison in the world, you have no excuse come the day you die and face God that you never got the chance to receive the pardon for all your sins through Jesus Christ. There is now an application called Go Bible which you can install on your phone and even search for verses on a topic or using a certain word. If you ever forget your Bible when you go to Church, you probably wouldnt have forgotten to bring your phone.

4. Fring - Turn your mobile into a VOIP phone when you are at home or somewhere a free WIFI hotspot is available. Also you can log onto MSN without booting up your computer. Read more here about Fring.

5. YouTaggedMe - Got a message to proclaim to all the people you walk past? Try YouTaggedMe which brings bluejacking to a whole new level. The program sends to everyone with their bluetooth switched on a message from you as defined by you. This obviously can be used for good or evil. Don't be evil!

There are other programs which I thought are quite good but require registration and hence money, such as the XS2theworld travel series which provides simple phrases in another language, speaking on your behalf to a shocked host. If you find yourself in Bangkok wanting to say "too expensive", let your phone loudspeaker speak for you! Read more here . Then there is Handy Alarm, QuickOffice and many more... but if you have discovered a program which you absolutely love, please leave a comment to share with the rest of the class.

Also YouTube would have been on this list if it worked for me.. see this post for more.

Youtube on Nokia - does it work?

I recently posted an entry about Youtube's new software for Nokia E65 and other symbian phones but I found that it didn't work for me. I only tried using my WIFI connection at home to try it out but it kept saying something like "connection lost. please restart the video". The previews for the videos show up fine but when I click on the video, it doesnt show up. Did anyone else have better luck with this?

Turn your phone into a WIFI Hotspot!

Ever wanted to connect your laptop to the internet using your mobile phone's internet connection? I have. I always wondered whether it was possible. Now it's possible with this program, JoikuSpot Light Beta. I found out about this program through an article on LifeHacker "Turn your Nokia Phone into a WI-FI hotspot".

I've uploaded the program to my phone but havent tried it out yet. Best of all, this program is FREE. We like free.. and if you don't have internet on your phone, remember you can always find a free wifi hotspot. See this post.

Warning:
Just remember that you should only share your internet connection if you have a sufficiently big enough data plan with your mobile.

Nokia E65 top 5 on imobile.com.au

The imobile top 5 website has had Nokia E65 in the top five for the past five weeks at the time this post went up. This is part of what they said:

The E65 is a great upgrade to the Nokia 6288 handset. It has more of a business focus, and includes a wide range of pre-installed productivity applications. There’s also the restyled exterior, which has been thinned down to 15.5mm. Highlight features of the E65 include the wide network support (quad-band 2G and 2100MHz 3G), Bluetooth, Infrared, and USB connectivity, microSD memory card support, and the Symbian operating system. There’s great support for BlackBerry and Mail for Exchange push e-mail services (with compatible servers), and the usual suite of SMS, MMS, instant messaging, and regular e-mail support has been included.

The rest can be found here.
