Gmail Mobile doesnt send emails! 404 Error that wont go away

I am quite surprised that such a well used mobile application can still exist with this problem - I have been using the Gmail application for my E65 and its great to check email. It stays logged in so all I need to do is open up the applicatin and i can check my email straight away. However. If I ever try to reply an email, it comes up with a 404 Error.

I thought that it was because my Gmail program was out of date (it was, but after installing the update 1.5 it still did not work!) How did they miss this? Also, it logs out of gmail so one has to input the password again. If anyone knows a fix for this, please reply. If it works for you, please state your mobile type as it may be a problem isolated to some mobile models.

EDIT: This error has been solved. Go to http://mye65.blogspot.com/2008/05/my-e65-now-can-send-emails-with-gmail.html to see the fix!

Nokia E65 SAR Radiation Concerns?

A TV "current affairs" program in Australia yesterday raised concerns regarding the safety of the Nokia E65 radiation levels. The standard SAR is apparently 2 watts/kg but the Nokia E65 in their tests had a reading of 3.35 / 5.84. The other phones "tested" were:

1. Sagem and Vodafone 226
2 Sony Ericsson W910I : 2.14
3. Telstra HTV and Touchphone 850: 2.46 2.92
4. Nokia E65: 3.35 5.84

However, Mr Althaus of the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) said that this was no big deal since “The standards have a 50-fold safety margin". This means, the radiation would have to be about 100 before there is a problem.

I am not an expert but I know well enough that the program which aired these concerns (Today Ton1ght) are known for sensationalising stories and their "scientific research" is often not very reliable.

Having heard about this report, I found this article from a company called EMFacts Consultancy who were very quick to analyse (or criticise) the story. You can read it here. One quote from the article said about the research:

"
I would add that using a ‘phantom jell’ to approximate the human brain is a totally inaccurate representation of the human brain - unless you happen to have a head filled with jello! Such crude measurements cannot pick up reflections and hot-spots in brain structures. And all this is only for SAR thermal effects. It is very crude and this is the usual method the manufacturers use to test phone compliance"

So Nokia E65 users rest easy for now until a researcher leaves us a comment to give us more cause for concern about our E65s :)

Tips for travelling with your E65 or other Nokia

Hands up those who forgot something when they went travelling? Well, the following list will help you minimise SOME of those things and help you use your E65 to travel like a frequent flyer.

1. Check roaming is activated. If you intend to be contacted by people calling your current number, you should ensure that international roaming has been activated. It would also be adviseable to check the call rates for roaming so that you don't come home to a nasty bill. Another tip regarding roaming is that if you SMS, usually the charge for this service is very reasonable so use SMS as much as you can when traveling.

2. Notes Store your essential information on your phone. If you are storing sensitive information like passport numbers, maybe its a good idea to store it in a note without specifying that it is your passport number. Call it your mother(land)'s number or something. Things you might store could be:

- Hotel address and contact numbers and booking reference numbers

- Emergency contact numbers

- Good places to get free wifi, cheap food

3. Calendar Store your flight times, booking details and key appointments. Backup to gmail or google calendar.

4. Charger / Spare Battery This is one of those things that most commonly gets left behind when you go on holidays. It is worth carrying a spare battery with you wherever you go as well because your you really need your phone operational because it also acts as a PDA, computer, notes, map, tour guide and calculator. (Try using a conversion application for currencies. All you need to do is input the rate and just input the amount you want to convert).

5. Backup your mobile numbers, sms, calendars etc using your PC suite so that if anything happens to your mobile phone on holidays, you are not completely devastated.

6. Store your IMEI number in case your phone is lost or stolen. The IMEI number can be contacted

7. Remote Locking Figure out how this works before you leave... a video will be posted here in due time but for now check out this link for more about this security feature I bet you didn't know existed on your E65. :)

8. Translator? If you do not speak the language, consider a program such as xs2theworld.com which provides programs such as XS2Beijing, XS2Bangkok, XS2Rome etc. This program will speak out through your loudspeaker, common phrases that you might need if you do not speak the local language. Read more here

If you didn't forget your toothbrush, then you are on your way to a happy holiday or business trip with these tips. Find more tips how you can make the most of your Nokia E65, use the search bar on the right or maybe follow the previous posts in the archive.

All You Need to Know About your Nokia E65 Alarm Clock

1. Works when its off. This might be plain obvious to some but to others, it will be quite a surprise. Your Nokia alarm clock works even when the phone is turned off. This means that after you have set your alarm, you can turn it off before you go to sleep. This will:
1. Stop people from calling you in the middle of the night
2. Save your battery power
3. Prevent radiation affecting your sleep as some reports have indicated

2. Alarm Clock does not vibrate when charging. Your Nokia doesn't vibrate when it is being charged so if your alarm goes off, the vibration won't.

3. Cannot set multiple alarms. Save your effort, there is no multiple alarm setting for the alarm clock - for the Nokia E65 anyway. The only other way is to set alarms in your calendar entries if you want more than one alarm set in one go. You'll need a next generation Nokia E series to do this.

4. You can learn something new every morning with your alarm clock. Most people would probably have worked out that you could use a song as your alarm clock (yeah, Beautiful Day is a great idea for an alarm), but have you ever thought of setting your alarm clock to something you can learn? Read more here if you want to know how or why anyone would do that. Note: only the first 90 sec of the recording will be used by the alarm clock.

5. You can set your own recording as your alarm clock. For example, you can use Voice Recorder to record a sound file of you yelling "WAKKKKEEEE UPPPPPPP!!!" to get yourself out of bed. Or read yourself 10 reasons to get out of bed if you prefer a more gentle form of coercion.

6. Set your CLOCK as your shortcut key. Since the alarm is something you probably use every day, it may be a good idea to set your clock (and therefore your alarm clock) as a shortcut key on your phone. This will save you a few precious seconds before you fall asleep and save you from forgetting to set your alarm.

How to sync 'n' print your Nokia E65 calendar schedule

This is somewhat related to the tip about syncing your phone with Google Calendar. One way you can print out a schedule from your phone is to sync your mobile with Outlook using the PC Suite and print out the calendar from Outlook.

If you have other Google calendars that you use, you can use the Google Sync tool to sync Outlook with Google Calendar and print out an agenda from there. This can be a very useful way of printing your phone calendar events with, say, your company's events if they are on Google calendar. Another advantage of syncing your phone calendar with your google/outlook calendars is the ease of inputting events on the comptuer rather than on your phone.

7 Things you can do with your Nokia Notes

Here are a couple of ideas which you can use for the NOTES feature of your phone. For those ideas that involve your computer, you can save a TEXT file (open Notepad in Windows) and drag that text file into your Nokia PC Suite or to your Bluesoleil bluetooth application. Hope that maybe one or two of these will benefit you.

1. Record a list of restaurants that you would like to try, for times when you can't think of any.

2. List names of people that you need to see, talk to about something, or give something to and then delete their names as you do so.
3. Save an article from the internet that you would like to read later on
4. Take a moment to write down things that you would like to do or remember
5. Text in people's email addresses or details that you dont want to put in the contact book yet (sometimes adding a stranger's name into your contact book is no good when you forget their name later and cant find it in your contact book)
6. Nokia Notes' puts the most updated notes file at the top of the list and records the date (and time) that the file was last editted. This can help you to keep a diary of events or blog posts that you would like to upload later when you get to a computer.

7. List down Bible verses that you would like to memorise and open up that notes file when you dont have anything else to do.

Just released! New Nokia PC Suite 6.86.9.0

Nokia seems to have been working hard to come up with yet another update to the Nokia PC Suite, your computer's connection to your Nokia E65. This software update which is now available here enables you to:

  • View your mobile device's calendar in the main window
  • Delete and reply to text messages in the main window
  • Experience the fresh appearance of applications
This is on top of the new feature released earlier which now shows your most recent SMS messages on a side bar which allows you to click on the recent messages, read it and then reply using your PC keywboard.. a much faster way of texting your friends, family or colleagues. Now you can make the most of those unlimited SMS that some phone operators are now offering.

The Calendar option only allows you to view the calendar. You cannot yet add a new calendar entry from your computer which is probably the next version up when they get around to it. For now, the best thing to do with your calendar is to sync it with Microsoft Outloook and Google Calendar!

If you are in Australia, the fastest download is from here. More tips and tricks for your Nokia E65 can be found by searching this website on the sidebar to the right of this window. Have fun!

Google Mobile Maps - Why you must have it

Anyone with a Nokia E65 should install Google Maps and show their Nokia N95 friends that we can have a smaller, lighter, better looking phone and still:

1. Find out where the nearby restaurants, banks, shops
2. Find out roughly where you are
3. Get directions to and from a certain place
4. Figure out how long your road trip is going to take
5. See what the Sydney Opera House looks like from a bird's eye view

all without a GPS.. find out more by clicking on the image below. Remember that Google Maps will still need a data plan or find yourself a WIFI hotspot

Now, where am I...

Here are 9 things you can do with your Nokia Calendar that you may (or may not) have thought of already:

4. Record memorable events that have already passed
5. Send a fellow Nokia user a calendar entry
6. Send a fellow Nokia user a calendar reminder (alarm time for calendar will also be sent)
7. Upload your mobile phone calendar entries to your google calendar
8. Print out your mobile phone calendar entries once uploaded to your google calendar
9. Set multiple "meetings" with alarms if you need to get up but might turn off the alarm and snooze.

Find a good restaurant in Sydney on your phone

If you happen to be using a free wifi connection in a Sydney library or other free wifi location and you are looking for a good restaurant, the Sydney Good Food Guide is now online and in mobile format as well.

On your phone, go to http://m.gfg.smh.com.au to look up what restaurants have been given a good, fair review. This is just another good bookmark for your E65 internet browser :)

Mobile Google Map shows My Location

The Nokia E65 has just become almost a Nokia N95 with a GPS-like feature now available with the advent of Google Map for Mobile's new "MY LOCATION" feature. As mentioned in a previous post, this feature allows you to press "0" while you are using Google Maps to tell you roughly where you are. While this does not show you your precise location, you can figure out which direction you are going by refreshing your approximate location. This will give you an idea of what direction you are travelling on a street if you cant read a map. Try it yourself. Very cool feature to play with.

$19 CAP plan with Optus - FREE Nokia E65 deal!

Optus has just released a new deal which should have everyone reading this rushing out the door to get a Nokia E65. Their Optus $19 cap plan now includes a free Nokia E65! This includes $50 worth of free calls each month but this should only suit occasional mobile phone users. Or those looking to purchase a Nokia E65 for AU$456 paid over 24 months.

Here's what it includes
- Free calls to other optus pre-paid and plan users from 8pm - 12pm for 20min at a time (called "yes time")
- Free calls to other optus mobiles on the same bill, if you put this new phone on an existing mobile phone bill
- $50 worth of included calls, sms, international sms, video calls, mms, push to talk, and voicemail
- Free Nokia E65

Call rates are at:
47c per 30seconds with a 35c flagfall

SMS are at:
25c anywhere in Australia
50c international.

At the time of posting, the cheapest you can buy a Nokia E65 is $375 upfront as checked up on http://www.staticice.com.au/ but the average price is about $550. It would almost be worth signing up for this plan just for the phone.

Asking the Optus World people, the next up offer is the $49 cap but you have to pay an extra $5 per month for handset repayments! I don't think this deal will last long if the take-up is good.

NOTES:
If you are looking for a deal that includes wireless broadband, check out this deal

If you are wanting to spend more than $50 per month on calls, maybe a $29 cap is better with Three. Maybe good to be three.

How to pull apart your Nokia E65

If you ever get the urge to take apart your phone, this is how it is done (apparently). Remember, do not try this at home if you are the kind of person who doesnt know how to put back together something that you have pulled apart.
