Nokia E65 new firmware - Should I get it?

My Answer, no. But if you want it, go to this post. I have installed the new firmware 2.065.... whatever. It hasnt really added to my Nokia E65 experience so I am tempted to say dont bother, unless someone else has found something that they enjoy about the new firmware. You can see all the new features of the new firmware here.

Installing... installing what?

I upgraded my Nokia E65 firmware and now every time i start up the phone it wants to install some new applications which it then says is not available. If anyone else has had this problem please let me know what you did about it. I need to find a way of deleting the application from the APPLICATION MANAGER so if you know, reply by way of a comment.

Check ALL your email addresses with GMAIL

Gmail has a feature now which allows gmail to retrieve a copy of all your emails from another POP3 email account and use the GMAIL application on your Nokia E65 or other Symbian phone to check two or three email accounts at the same time just with one press of the button!

So how does it work? Go to SETTINGS in your gmail and go to ACCOUNTS --> GET MAIL FROM OTHER ACCOUNTS --> enter all your details like name and email address. TICK "leave a copy on the server" which will make gmail check that account but won't download the emails so that yo ucan still download it on to your outlook or whatever program you normally use to keep your emails.

Why would  you want to set this up? If you want to switch to GMAIL, this is one way to ensure you don't miss any emails from your old email account. If you are like me and prefer a non-gmail account, this serves as a way of checking your email on the run without having to type in your login and password every time. All you need to do is run the GMAIL application on your phone and you can see all the emails from your Telstra, Optus, iiNET, Dodo, arachnet, Westnet or whatever ISP account you have. You can even reply using gmail as if you were using your ISP's account. That and other features can be explored in the gmail settings.

Before this feature, if you wanted to check, say, your ISP Telstra or Optus email address, you will need to login using a POP3 or webmail feature. if you wanted to keep a back up of your emails you had to make outlook forward all the emails you receive to gmail. This meant that everything in your inbox would come in and then be sent out again to gmail, increasing your SENT box and taking 2x the time. Sometimes Outlook would play up and if the operation was cancelled for whatever reason, the rest of the new emails coming in wouldnt be sent to gmail. That meant that you needed to forward each email painfully. Even when you got into gmail, all the emails would say they were from your other email address, even though they were actually from someone else. that made it hard to find straight away an email from a particular person. This is one very cool feature that gmail has implemented, making it more and more convincing that everyone will soon be on GMAIL instead.

Why Nokia E65? - Youtube on your phone

Congratulations, if you have Nokia E65 you can now get Youtube on your phone! You can view clips on your phone by going to http://m.youtube.com on your phone and it should prompt you to download a YouTube application. Warning: As videos are data intensive, it is advised that you do not use youtube on your phone unless you have a phone plan that includes a generous amount of DATA.
Alternatively, you can use your phone to connect to FREE WIRELESS internet at home or at a nearby cafe providing free WIFI and surf to youtube that way. With Google and your Nokia E65, your computer is fast becoming irrelevant.. Leave a comment if you have tried YouTube on your Nokia E65. Articles on this release can be found here or here

I have not been able to get YouTube working on my phone. I refuse to use the Optus Streaming feature as it eats up a lot of my money. I tried using my home LAN but it doesnt seem to work.

Why Nokia E65? The Dark Horse of 2007

Recent article sums up what all Nokia E65 users know, in their wrap up of Nokia phones in 2007:

The E65 was the dark horse of the Eseries lineup. With dedicated keys that only someone who uses an internal VoIP system or participates in a lot of conference calls would appreciate, the E65 came out of nowhere as one of the most popular smartphones Nokia has released this year. It feels absolutely amazing in your hand and it only needs a little tweaking to be even better. Standard 3.5 mm headphone jack is a must, 3.2 megapixel camera please and GPS if you can cram it in there. The E66 has all that, but again lacks a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Nokia must think businessmen shouldn’t enjoy music.

Google loves Nokia E65

I came across this article which concluded that Nokia E65 and Google applications such as Google Maps and Google Gmail get along the best compared to a Sony Ericsson phone. Its something to consider when you are buying a new phone. With the interconnectivity of the world and the ever dominance of Google and its products, you may also be forced to make decisions based on Google and not necessarily just on the phone's features. However, have a look around on this blog and you'll realise E65 has features aplenty, except:
* FM Radio
* Torch
* GPS (but you can get a bluetooth GPS dongle for the phone)
* Stopwatch
Everything else seems to be there..

Nokia E65 Hacks - Memory Card Password?

For some reason even when you did not add a password to your memory card, sometimes your phone after a factory reset, may ask you for a password for your memory card. There is a way around this. Go to SETTINGS à SECURITY à REMOTE LOCK and add a new codeword for locking your phone eg “lockthis” and put in your lock CODE (default is 12345). When this is done, use your lock codeword “lockthis” as the password for the memory card and you should be able to get into your memory card again.

Now isn't that tip worth a small donation? :)

Why Nokia E65? Alarm clock - learn something while getting out of bed

Wake on Knowledge One of the most wasted times of the day is the time between waking up and getting out of bed. One thing you can do to make the most of this time is use a MP3 or podcast as your alarm clock. Only the first 20 seconds or so will be used as an alarm. For example, if you are a Christian and you believe in the value of hearing God's word every day, you can have a chapter of the Bible read out to you (even with soft music) which you can get from here. Other podcasts you can use can be from www.lifehack.org or some other useful websites.

Falling Asleep If you struggle with falling asleep you might even use this technique to give you three minutes of the Bible or your favourite podcast read out to you while you enter dreamland. Apparently this is an effective way of improving recall.

Why Nokia E65? - what CNET editors and users say

One of the most trusted sources of comparing phones and getting a good review is CNET. Here are what the editors and users from four CNET websites said of the Nokia E65.

CNET Australia Nokia E65 - Editors 8.3/10 Users 7.4/10

Quick access documents

If you have already downloaded GMAIL to your phone and you have a relatively inexpensive data plan, you can use GMAIL as a means of storing documents that you may need on the run. The Nokia E65 can open PDF, XLS and DOC files in GMAIL but the problem is, Gmail currently does not allow you to open XLS files using the nokia excel viewer – only using google reader which doesn’t always display excel files properly.

Also, Gmail’s search tool on the phone is so useful to get to documents very quickly. Make it a habit of emailing your documents to a gmail account for back up and make Gmail your Nokia E65 friend today.

Free WIFI hotspots around Australia - see them on google maps

So you find yourself in Australia with your Nokia E65 or laptop and you want to find out what you can do in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane or Sydney but you realise... you need internet!

One of the advantages of having the Nokia E65 is the WIFI access you can get and its better when it is free! Connect to the internet by getting yourself to these locations with your E65 around Australia (or your laptop). These hotspots are free for iiNET customers if it is a tomizone hotspot. Login using your iiNET username and password and get 100mb / month free at any tomizone hotspot.

If you know of other free WIFI hotspots in Australia, you can add them to the comments of this google map. As this list is by no means comprehensive, every contribution you make to the list will make it more and more useful so bookmark that page and keep your Nokia E65s searching for new free Wi-Fi locations around Australia (ok why not, the world too).

View Larger Map

EDIT: There are new free wifi hotspots in Sydney. Every public library in Sydney now has free WIFI! Read more about it here. Also, there is talk about the buses in Sydney trialling free WIFI so look out for that too.

EDIT: In Perth, it will soon be possible to look up public transport on Google Transit which will mean that you can stop at the Alexander Library in the City and plot your next destination from your free WIFI connection.

Fring - VOIP and MSN Messenger for Nokia E65

Check out www.fring.com if you are attempting to use the VOIP feature on the Nokia E65. The set up is pretty straightforward but one warning should be shared - sometimes finding the connection type can take a long time. If you are intending to install this program, you will need to surf to the fring website on your mobile phone. I have found this program to be pretty good for using MSN Messenger on your phone. Saves the time waiting for your computer to boot up.
