$69 cap gets E65, 2GB download and $550 calls every month!

For those Australians who have been investigating whether to get a Nokia E65, i think the decision has just been made for you by THREE.

Their $69 cap plan now gets you a FREE Nokia E65 and the usual $550 worth of calls, sms per month to other networks and $210 worth of calls to THREE users per month. Now, they have added a bonus worth $29/month which is a free USB modem and 2GB download per month! The only catch is that the 2GB download can only be used on a separate SIM card given to you. This means that you will not be able to use your phone to download or as a modem (unless u take out your existing SIM card), so this deal is aimed at those looking for mobile broadband for their laptop/computer AND a nokia E65. More details can be found here.

BUT before you sign up, this is how you should do it:

1. AS mentioned in a previous post, sign up with Moneybackco first to get $24 cashback

2. Go to the three website after you have logged into Moneybackco, to sign up to the cap plan online and get $50 credited to your mobile account.

3. If you sign up for the $69 cap, you'll end up having a free Nokia E65, $550 worth of calls and SMS every month, mobile broadband USB dongle, 2GB to use anywhere in 3-coverage areas (eg capital cities in Australia), $50 bonus online credit and $24 cashback from Moneybackco.

From this website, you can see the benefits of a Nokia E65. As far as I know, this is the best offer in Australia for getting a Nokia E65 if you want mobile broadband as well. If you don't, then just sign up for a $29 cap plan and still get the mobile phone free. If you do take this offer, leave a comment below as we'd all love to hear about it.

Your Hacks - What do you do with Nokia E65 Flash Player?

Looking through the different applications on the Nokia E65, I come across the Adobe Flash Player. I realised that in the past nine months of using this phone i have NEVER used this program! Am I missing something or has no other E65 user ever used Adobe Flash Player too? I have tried to look this up online but havent really (tried that hard) found anything about this. Flash experts do rise to this occasion and lend us your wisdom.

SECRET Codes for Nokia E65 (and other Nokias)

You found it! It's not a hack but here are some secret codes for Nokia E65 which also work for other nokia phones. Ever since I had my first nokia, I was always keen to find out the secret codes. It seems many have remained the same since the Nokia 5110.

*#06#
- As mentioned in the stolen phone post, this is used to show you your Nokia E65 serial number of IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identifier) as they call it in the mobile world.

*#92702689# (*#war0anty#) - This will show you the "Life Timer" of your phone, i.e. the total time you have spent on phone calls (in minutes). eg "Life Timer: 46:40"

*#0000# - This will show you the software version, the date when the software was built and the phone model. If you have software version 2.0633.65.01 you are up to date. If not, go here to find out how to update your phone firmware.

*#2820# (*#BTA0#) - This will display the Bluetooth device address for your Nokia E65.

*#62209526# (*#MAC0WLAN) - This will show you the MAC address of the WLAN adapter. Find out more about WIFI on the Nokia E65 here and locations for accessing free wifi in Australia.

Finally.. don't do this one just to try it out - it will wipe everything off your phone!

*#7370# (*#RES0#) - This will reset your phone to factory default settings. Only do this in the event of an emergency (can't think of one right now) and you don't mind losing all your customizing, which, if you are following this blog, could be quite a lot! The default security code if asked is12345.

Press 0 for Shortcut to the Internet

Want the fastest way to get to your mobile phone internet browser? If you press and hold down 0, your Nokia will load up the web browser. The phone will then ask you to choose an access point unless you already have a default access point set up. This means that there is no real point having your Web Browser as one of the standby applications on the standby screen as pressing 0 will get you surfing the net faster. Save that precious standby appliction slot at the top of your screen for a more valuable application.

Updates to Nokia PC Suite 6.85.14.1

One great thing about the Nokia E65 is that Nokia is continuously releasing updates for the PC Suite software. One change I noticed when I updated my Nokia PC suite was that there is a new feature which shows a preview of your SMS messages on the main window! This is quite useful to reply to recent sms using your computer keyboard. Other updates in the newest release include:

PC Suite version 6.85.14.1 December 11, 2007
- USB Driver which brings improvements in Nokia Software Updater performance.
- A fix which enables the Nokia Software Updater application v1.4.14 to self-update

Earlier updates included:

PC Suite version 6.85.12.0 November 28, 2007
- Enabled Copying files to your mobile by dragging them on top of the phone image in the main window
- Synchronize Windows Vista Calendar with your device calendar
- Bug fixes and improvements to stability

PC Suite version 6.84.10.3 July 04, 2007
- Enhancements to performance and stability
- Enables the synchronization of files and folders between PC and phone
- Notifies when new add-on applications are available

Apart from these are other new applications that have been added such as the Nokia Multimedia Factory, Nokia Video Manager. These may be discussed later but if you have any comments, please add them here.

How do I update Nokia Firmware?

Some people, particularly 3 users have had trouble finding the firmware for the Nokia E65. Go to this page to get the most updated firmware.

If you want to know what is in this new firmware, have a look at this post and decide whether the new firmware is worth it or not. Some things to note when updating your firmware, just make sure nothing interrupts your phone's firmware update (make sure battery is fully charged and your computer will not suddenly turn off or anything).

Why Nokia E65 - shortcuts aplenty

On the Active standby screen, you will notice that there are shortcuts on the top row. These are customizable under TOOLS --> SETTINGS --> PHONE --> STANDBY MODE --> ACTIVE STANDBY APPS. After a lot of thinking, these are the shortcuts that I have chosen as my "top 6" mainly because these are applications which I would need quickly if I used them:

  • King James Bible to check a verse or two(Download from www.go-bible.org)
  • Calendar to add a new appointment
  • Google Maps to check where I am
  • Camera to take a quick photo
  • File Manager to play an MP3
  • Messaging to refer to an old sms
Also customisable are the LEFT SELECTION KEY and the RIGHT SELECTION KEY. My left key is used for the Calculator and my right key is used to get into my notes. I use notes for taking down peoples emails, making lists, and sometimes even taking notes during a meeting (I use the nokia bluetooth keyboard).

The other key is the bottom left key in the middle section which looks like a round ... thing called the OWN KEY. To customize this one, press and hold down that button. I use that to get into my clock to set alarms etc.

Style hack - new Nokia Theme

One feature that can be easily missed in the new Nokia E65 firmware is the "NOKIA" theme which can be accessed in TOOLS -> THEMES . I am personally not that fussed with my Nokia backgrounds but after changing the theme, it has made a very notable difference to the look of the phone. The new "NOKIA" theme gives a blue background with a better looking battery and coverage indicators, guidelines in the calendar and just a clearer, brighter theme if you are used to the boring "Dots" themes.

Alternatively, you can hunt around the internet for other themes. If you have come across a good theme for your E65, please share in the comments section with a link to where the theme can be downloaded.

Prove that stolen phone was yours with IMEI

Every mobile phone produced has an individual IMEI or serial number. To check what IMEI number your Nokia phone is, press *#06#.

Write this down and store it somewhere (not in your phone!) If something was to happen to your phone, you can report the stolen phone to police with the IMEI and if it is found, they can return it to you.

Also if your phone IS stolen, one would hope that you already set up your REMOTE LOCK feature! This allows you to lock your phone by sending a SMS to it.

This is how to turn off the camera sound on Nokia phones

How do you turn off the shutter sound on a Nokia camera phone? It's possible! But not using the existing Nokia camera program. You will need to use this program to take photos. cCam is in development and is free (for now). It allows you to turn off the camera shutter sound on your Nokia E65 or any E series or N series cameras. Download cCam for s60 v103 program here thanks to its developer.

The previous version was confusing to use if you were using a Nokia E65 because the orientation of the camera was not right. This has been fixed in the above version. Other tips and hacks for E65 and other Nokia phones can also be found on this website here. Use the search on your right to navigate.

Inserting a phone number in a SMS

It seemed like Nokia had forgotten to add an option “Insert number” in the SMS options menu but in fact the best way to include a phone number from your address book is to press the address book button whilst compiling your sms and select the number that you would like to copy and paste. Go to USE NUMBER in the OPTIONS and select COPY. Exit out of the address book and press the COPY/PASTE button on the right of the phone and select PASTE. Done. Nokia developers don’t seem to be as dumb as we thought they were.

VOIP with Nokia E65 and iiNET

I still have not managed to make VOIP work on my Nokia E65 except when I am using Fring. The settings for a Nokia E65 used with Australian ISP iiNET is found below, not sure if anyone has had experience trying to make this work and maybe you changed something relatively minor and everything worked. Though these settings are specific to iiNET users, maybe share your solutions setting up VOIP with the Nokia E65 with your wireless LAN.

E65 trick - Call from an SMS

Whenever you are in the SMS inbox of your Nokia E65, you can choose to call the person back just by pressing the call button. This is useful as you may have:
- Received a SMS from someone you do not have in your contact book and would like to call them back to ask them who they are
- Reply to a SMS by talking to the person
- Call someone back regarding a sms that you received a while ago but only just go to see.
You can even select a number that someone sms you and press the call button to call up that number. The best way to make the most of your Nokia E65 is to experiment with all the different features and if you discover a shorter way of doing something as a result, leave a comment to help everyone else out.

SMS Hack - Let EVERYONE know

There may be a group of people that you normally would like to contact or notify of something in one go. Maybe you have a group of members of a footy club that you want to let them all know that a meeting is cancelled. Rather than contacting each person individually or sending each person a SMS, you can create a group profile and send everyone the same SMS in one go.

How do you do this? To set up a group profile, go to your address book by pressing the TOP RIGHT button in the MIDDLE section of your phone which has a contact book icon on it. Press across when you are in the menu, this will move to the GROUP address book. Press the top left OPTION button and go to NEW GROUP.

Name your group (eg "basketball team") and then add people to the group. When you send an SMS, press the right navigation key to access the GROUP address book and select "Basketball team". When you send the sms, it will be sent to all the people in that group. Note however that each sms will be sent to the members one at a time. This may mean that looking through your inbox or creating another msg while this is being processed may take some time. Have fun with it! Can be very useful for example -

  • To invite a group of people to an event
  • To ask a question to many people at the same time
  • Give an update about something
  • Send out an encouragement to many people
