Google Maps 2.0.5 on Nokia E65 - sweet
I’ve downloaded the most recent update of Google Maps 2.0 which comes with a new feature “MY LOCATION”. This enables you to find out where you are, based on your proximity to the closest mobile phone tower currently . In Australia, you can only get an approximate location based on the phone tower radius of 1.7km (from what I worked out). When you install this from www.google.com/gmm, make sure you install to your phone memory as I had problems installing it to my memory card.
Google maps on your phone allows you to get directions from one location to another. If you searched for example, Los Angeles Airport, you can then press the main key on your phone to get options to find out how to get to/from Los Angeles Airport. An example below shows a person going from Milson's Point to Sydney Airport. The map first shows you a summary of the journey, then you can see the journey on the map, pressing "3" every time you get to a significant turning point in the journey to find out what to do next.
The searches I think have improved on this new version of Google Maps. If you look up “restaurants” you can toggle between the results by pressing 4 and 6. Zoom in on the map with 3 and zoom out with 1. Pressing 0 will get you to your Google Maps' "my location".

Why Nokia E65? Mobile Google Maps replaces GPS
When I first bought the Nokia E65, I was contemplating forking out the extra $500 for the N95 which came with the GPS. After weeks of contemplation, I decided the GPS was not worth it, would be a drain on the mobile’s battery life and adds to the weight of a phone. Good move! Because Google Maps has just unveiled new mobile phone software that can calculate where you are (see this article from news.com.au http://www.news.com.au/business/story/0,23636,22841712-462,00.html ) I haven’t tried it out but maybe there are other E65 users out there that have already downloaded the latest update to google maps for E65.

Why Nokia E65? Video
The video feature of the Nokia E65 is quite impressive. The frame rate is 30 frames per second which is pretty high for a mobile phone and comes out quite well on the computer when replayed. The videos can be recorded in 640x480 mode which is VGA mode. Also a handy feature is the PAUSE button for the video mode, which allows you to temporarily pause your recording and restart it when you have something else to record. With the NOKIA Bluetooth sync enabled, you will see the video played back when you go near your computer as the computer detects the new video file and sets out to download and play the file. On holidays this can be quite useful (no need to carry an extra cable) and surprising when you suddenly hear your laptop playing your video file without your prompting.

Reminders using Camera
I’ve mentioned earlier that Bluetooth can be used to automatically synchronise calendar, notes, contacts etc with your computer and your phone. Also I think I mentioned that you can automatically upload your photos from your phone to the computer via “STORE IMAGES” feature in the Nokia PC Suite. One cool thing that the PC Suite can do is when it stores new photos, they can load up those photos in the NOKIA multimedia player so you can see the pictures straight away. But did you realise you can use this feature as a REMINDER tool?
Lets say you have a bill that you need to pay online. Rather than set up a calendar reminder, you can take a photo of the bill and when you turn on your computer and your phone is nearby, the phone and computer will sync and automatically load up the picture of the bill that you need to pay. On seeing this you can remind yourself to pay the bill. Interesting use of the camera?

Why Nokia E65? - Hash for Hush how to silence ur phone quickly
One useful feature that I found myself using a lot is the # key which you can press and hold down to change your phone to SILENT mode and back out to GENERAL mode. Very useful when you are going into a Church or theatre, rather than pressing down on the OFF key and having to wait for your phone to reboot later (and we all know how long THAT takes!!!)
Another feature which I should add as another post but I won't is the SILENCE mode which you can switch to when people are calling you. Imagine you are in a great conversation with someone and before the other person realizes that your phone is going off, you want to turn it off... but you don't want ot upset the person by rejecting their call (that's so rude!) so you can press the right navi key and stop the phone ringing and vibrating.
EVEN BETTER is the send SMS feature. You can preset an SMS to send to people when you want to let them know u cant take the call now but you will call them back. Also very professional feature.. so you don't lose business contacts and friends just because they called at a bad time... well hope you find those tips useful.

Why Nokia E65? - Increased Australian WIFI coming soon
Recently, iiNET internet service providers in Australia announced a plan to provide their customers with the opportunity to provide (and sell) wireless internet access to those around their neighbourhood/business. THis will be provided through Tomizone and users will be able to receive 50% of the revenue generated by their wireless hotspot! Details soon at www.iinet.net.au
More exciting is that iiNET customers will be given 100mb download per month from any Tomizone WiFI access point in their city. With iiNET increasing their presence in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney in particular, this means that iiNET Nokia E65 users can surf the net for free* using points of presence. Kudos to iiNET for their innovative approach to marketing and one step closer to free WIFI in Australia.

Why Nokia E65? Auto Keylock Doesnt Exist but its not all bad
One of the most common complaints regarding the Nokia E65 is no auto keylock. However, when you open and shut the slider, it prompts you whether you want to lock the keypad. This is useful if you want to remind yourself of something within the hour or so. Type a reminder maybe in a SMS template and then open/shut the slider to lock the keypad. Now the screen stays on with the reminder in front of you next time you unlock your phone.
If you want to call someone back later, select their name in the address book and then lock your keypad
If you want to remember a series of numbers like a confirmation number, enter it in with your keypad and then lock the keypad. Or u can "miss call" the number so it shows up in your "LAST DIALLED" numbers.
If you came here to find an auto keylock.. sorry, I dont have the link on hand but if you look around here, you might find it ;)
Official word from Nokia about deleting words from Nokia E65 dictionary
In response to you enquiry, the Nokia E65 support adding new words to the messaging dictionary. Once the dictionary is full, the new word you add will replace the oldest added word.
There is no option to delete saved word in the dictionary"

Delete words from Nokia E65 Dictionary
I've looked high and low on the internet for a solution and there doesn't seem to be one for the Nokia E65. For the N95 apparently the dictionary can be TAUGHT what words you use the most and it will come up as the first word when using predictive text, however, if you are silly
enough to put IOU into the dictionary, typing "got" has just gotten that much harder. I don't know what situation I was in when I somehow added UIF to the dictionary which now renders "the" a second class word in the dictionary, requiring me to press * to get to that word. VERY VERY frustrating!! You can imagine the confusion when I inadvertantly say "have you iou money?" rather than "have you got money?" If anyone knows a way to delete words from the dictionary please reply to this message! I know you can format the phone but I'm not that keen on that idea.
EDIT: A solution has been found! Read this post!

Why Nokia E65 - Copy and Paste feature just like a computer
One of the useful tools I find is the COPY and PASTE function on the side of the phone. The pencil icon on the side allows you to copy text maybe from an email to a sms. With features like this, you can see how a Nokia E65 pretty much behaves like a computer... on that note, we can look at another computer-like function "multi-tasking"

Why Nokia E65? syncro-NICE
If you have a bluetooth dongle set up with your computer, you can upload songs to your phone when without connecting the phone to the computer via the cable. Even more useful is that if your phone automatically syncs with your PC, when you have taken photos for the day and you walk over to your computer, your computer and phone will start sorting out what photos are new and copy them over to the computer. This will also happen to your NOTES and your CALENDAR items*. Before you can even sit down, you already have your photos loaded up on your computer ready to be added to your blog, sent to your friends or just stored for safekeeping.
* All these features require you to set up your synchronisation with your phone and PC and there are options to only sync CALENDAR items for example if you dont want the other things sent over to your phone.
Why Nokia E65? MP3 player one less bulge
Quite often people will ask, why do you need your phone to do so many things? Well, when you have a phone that takes photos, you may not need a camera. When you also have an MP3 player, you can save on your pocket real estate.
With the Nokia E65, one small "hack" for listening to mp3s is to pair your phone with a bluetooth loudspeaker in your car so that you can listen to podcasts (dont really suggest listening to music unless you have a bluetooth receiver hooked up to your car stereo system) as you travel. As you listen to your mp3s, your phone will switch off the music when someone calls in and when you are finished with the call, it will switch the music back on. There's one advantage over your car stereo system. Another good thing is that the nokia E65 can multitask. Your phone can continue to play your mp3s even if you decide to use the calculator, start up your GPS bluetooth program or send an SMS to a friend.

Why Nokia E65? Seamless data transfer and quick booting ''PC"
When you get your hone for the first time, one of the most daunting tasks is transferring over your contacts from one phone to then new one. I sat myself dow for a mundane session of working this out when I discovered one of those hidden features in phones that make you go "oh, Awesome!'' Under settings, there is a feature called dat transfer. Select your old phone from the list of found bluetooth phones, elect what you want to transfer and press Copy!
Another cool feature having this phone is when you cant be bothered rebooting your computer to do a blog entry, turn on your wireless keyboard and start typing into your phone like I am doig now.

Nokia E65 - Questions driving you nuts
I've noticed that there has been an increasing number of people coming to this site probably with questions they want answered about the Nokia E65 (possibly from other E65 users). If you have such a question, post it here in the COMMENTS section and someone else passing by may have the answer.
Why Nokia E65? - Let Nokia Explain (video)
Sometimes its better just to let the experts tell you why. This is from the Nokia E65 CD that comes with the phone. Press play and away you go :)
Why Nokia E65? Size vs Features vs Price
When deciding which phone to get, I was wrestling between the Nokia N95, Nokia N80 and the Nokia E65. It wasn't easy choosing between the three but one thing that moved me towards the E65 was the size of the phone. When you look at it, the phone seems quite large but most of the phone's surface area is the screen. When you have features like mp4 and 3gp video playback,
camera, internet surfing and word processing, you start to appreciate the size of the screen! The E65 is about half the thickness of the N95 and the N80 making it one of the slimmer slide phones. Also, I heard from quite a few people that with the E65, the slide mechanism is a lot more solid than previous Nokia phones.
Nokia E65 - GPS when you want it
Back to the comparison, the N95 offers GPS and that was one of the biggest questions floating in my mind... would I pay another AU $500 for a phone with GPS? I decided there was no point because the Nokia E65 supports GPS but to buy this separately, you will need to buy a Bluetooth GPS device for about $100 more (a fraction less than buying a Nokia N95). I figured that the main use of GPS was in the car so if I got a bluetooth GPS device and put it in my car, it will connect to my E65 when I need it most - in the car.
Finally, you might be wondering why I was only comparing between Nokia phones. From what I have seen, Nokia phones are more intuitive in their design making the features of the phone easily accessible. This is unlike many other brands which may have all the bells and whistles but whats the point when you want to set an alarm for example, you need to scroll through
4 menus to get there?

Why Nokia E65? Travel Guide Programs!
You're in a foreign country and your "friend" who works as your full time interpreter has just ditched you for something that they have to do. You flag down a taxi and when you jump in, the taxi driver asks in Chinese, "Where do you want to go?" A cold sweat breaks out and you do a quick self-assessment on your miming skils and conclude, "I'm screwed!"
A new JAVA program has just been launched which is for mobile phones called XS2theWorld. NOt only does it provide over 300 phrases in a foreign language (read out, displayed on your phone in the foreign language and with pronounciation in ENglish!)... It also gives you a guide of the city you are visiting (restaurants, museums, shops etc) emergency contacts and a section for you to bookmark your favourite phrases for quick reference. Learn another language today because they are offering the first 5,000 users FREE DOWNLOAD of their program! Quick! Before you go, check out this video and see XS2Shanghai in action:

Why Nokia E65? - More on WAP/GPRS
OK lots of people ask "SO WHAT if you can surf the internet on your phone? When are you ever going to do that??" I'll have to go to some local examples for this one but I am sure you will also be able to apply this to wherever you come from. Consider the usefulness of having access to the following websites that I have bookmarked in my phone (or could have).
Qantas Arrivals/Departures
To find out the times for a flight coming in or leaving your city.
Rainfall Radar over your City
There are clouds in the sky and you are considering doing the 500m dash to the bus station... do you go for it? Check the rainfall radar! Or if you don't know what the weather is going to be like tonight, check the weather forecast
Sharemarket
Check what the price is for your favourite stocks.
Google or Snopes
Everything: http://www.google.com/ Urban Legends: http://www.snopes.com/
You're arguing with your friends about the stupidity of iPhones soldering their batteries to their phones to increase revenue and your friends INSIST that this is a myth... consult the oracle right there and then so you can rub it in their face that you were right!
Other useful situations (add your own website)
- Movie times
- Bus/train/ferry timetable
- News websites when you are waiting for a friend
- Web email
- Google suite of websites - gmail, calendar, maps (more on this another time)
There are many more possibilities with having an internet connection with your phone and you will probably find that once you do have it enabled, you would probably refer to the net at least once in your conversations with other people and it would probably frustrate those talking to you... especially if they dont have internet on their phone :P
Why Nokia E65? QuickOffice - Word Excel and Powerpoint
We'll now look at a scenario... you are on your way to a meeting.
Before the meeting..
Admittedly you may become cross eyed editing your excel spreadsheet on this phone, but QuickOffice is a very handy tool for those who may want to make last minute changes to their presentation or want to backup their word document because they don't trust their memory stick. Before you shout at me, I should mention that Quickoffice by default does not allow you to edit your files, you need to pay a small fee for that to be enabled. You can only view files until you upgrade the software. With a portable SU-8W Bluetooth Nokia keyboard you have yourself the lightest laptop you will ever find!!
After the meeting..
You can also send your presentation to other people via Bluetooth or even email the presentation from your phone if there is WiFi available. Failing that, you could use GPRS or WAP if you have a data plan with your phone. Failing that, you can eject your miniSD card, stick it into your SD Card adapter and plug it into your friend's computer (as most computers now have SD card readers).
There is another program that doesn't come with the E65 and it really makes you wonder why! The Nokia Presenter is a program that allows you to control a powerpoint presentation using your E65 via Bluetooth.. more on this another time! This is already too much to read for some.
EDIT: Many of the new phones now come with Quickoffice full version installed like E71

Why Nokia E65? - VOIP!
In Australia, most mobile plans are cap plans so this might not be as attractive a feature as it is in other countries. VOIP allows your mobile phone to connect to your VOIP or SKYPE account and call locally and internationally at a fraction of the price that you pay on your mobile plan.
The other day I was in a suburban shopping centre and noticed that there was a WiFi network about. I tried surfing the net and it worked! Then an idea came into my head... do you think I can call someone using my VOIP account even though I am not at home? I loaded up Fring and my MSN contacts loaded up. Cool! MSN in the shopping centre! Anyway, back to the VOIP.
I scrolled down and tried calling my sister, the program asked if I wanted to make an Internet or a Cellular call... Internet! A few seconds later, I heard it ringing! Later she asked me, "how come you were calling on from a land line?" *grin* It worked. The call cost me 15c under iiNET's VOIP plan.
Why Nokia E65? Personalisation on Standby
Sometimes it is the smallest things that make a difference. Nokia phones are more often using a STANDBY mode which conserves battery life. You can customize what the phone will display in this standby mode. It will show the time regardless of what option you choose as well as the missed calls or messages that you have received. But one cool thing you can do is customise the display to show whatever test you want, rather than display the date. Its nice to see your phone declaring its allegiance to you when it says "John's phone" while on standby. Sure this may not be a huge factor.. But its nice.

Why Nokia E65 - WiFi
WiFi
The world has changed. You can almost go anywhere and there will be a wireless network beckoning you to connect to the internet... often free of charge (except Australia McDonalds - stingy buggers signed up with Telstra to charge for wifi). THe phone surfs the net very well, the cursor intuitively hovers over each link as you scroll down in case you want to click through to another page. The phone has no problem finding WIFI networks either. The only problem is when networks require a PRIVATE VPN installed.
With a WIFI connection you can connect your phone through Fring to MSN Messenger or just use the Web MSN messenger.
You can also connect to your VOIP account, which leads to an interesting situation
* you can call your friends on a local number and talk at a cheaper rate (10c flat rate to any capital city in Australia if you are with iiNET).
* you can receive VOIP calls through your mobile phone when you are at home
* you can call other mobiles at a cheaper rate than your mobile provider.
My Nokia E65
For those who have had the privilege of owning this phone, I hope you join me in discovering the length and breadth of the many features that this phone offers! Here, we will discuss the many issues that come up with the Nokia E65 and share tips and tricks you didnt think were possible. I am from Australia and my phone is connected with Optus so some of the tips may be network sensitive. Hopefully you will find this page useful and contribute your thoughts

E65
How good is the E65? I've decided to get it. Was deciding between N95 and E65 but E65 was clearly a nicer phone, lighter and has everything except the GPS N95 has.
